Steve Spencer
Steve Spencer’s paintings are deeply connected to music. He experiences sound as color and rhythm, and that connection shapes the patterns, lines, and color fields in his work. Inspired by artists like David Hockney, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Henri Matisse, Wassily Kandinsky, Red Grooms, and Stuart Davis, Spencer approaches painting as a balance of structure and improvisation.
Although he began painting early in life, his path included careers in investment banking, screenwriting, and advertising before he returned fully to art. Drawing on folk art influences and Pop Art techniques, he developed a vibrant, expressive style focused on shape, color, and emotion rather than literal subject matter.
What began as paintings hung in his family’s dining room eventually led to sales, exhibitions, and recognition, including shows at the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art and awards such as Jazz Visual Artist of the Year and Baseball Artist of the Year. His work is now held in several permanent collections.
